READING PROJECTS FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR

For our class books, we will read George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion in April, and we will finish the year with Jules Verne's Around the World in 80 Days.

There are three required book projects for the second semester. Students will do the first two projects using the guidelines in the Prentice-Hall Literature textbooks, each one focusing on a different element of literature:

  • plot
  • character
  • setting
  • theme
  • point of view
  • images
  • figures of speech
  • sound

Remember, you are not allowed to do the same book twice or the same element twice in the school year. Pick something new!

Some elements are easier to do with novels. Some are easier to do on books of poetry. Whichever books you choose must be at an appropriate reading level for AGATE—you are not allowed to use Shel Silverstein books, for example, as much as we all love his work!

The first of these projects is due April 24. Students going to State History Day are excused from this project.

The second of these projects is due May 15. Students going to National History Day are excused from this project.

The final project for the year is more open-ended. You need to choose and read two AGATE level books relating to world geography and world history. Look for historical fiction. Like last semester, I have a list of recommended books, but you may chose a different book IF you get it approved ahead of time. In four paragraphs (a total of 400 to 600 words) compare and contrast your two books both in terms of content and style:

  • How are they alike in content?
  • How are they different in content?
  • How are they alike in style?
  • How are they different in style?

Make a poster or other artistic project to share your work. Make sure you include your name, the name of the book, and the name of the author. Be neat, accurate, colorful, and grammatically correct. Above all, be creative! We will look at examples from last year, but I won't give any more directions regarding presentation because I want you to come up with your own original ideas. Have fun!

The last project is due June 5. Do not be late with this one! I won't have much time to grade them. :)
